A programmable thermostat that lowers the temperature in your house at night or when you’re at work is a great device for saving energy in the fall and through most of the winter. But on the coldest winter nights, lowering your thermostat with a forced hot water system can be an invitation for heat-pipe freeze ups.
When the thermostat stops calling for heat to allow the inside temp to go down, the boiler stops circulating water through the heat pipes for a longer period of time. When it’s not moving, water can freeze, resulting in loss of heat in that zone, or frozen burst heat pipes.
In an “Arctic blast,” when the temperature drops into the single digits or below zero, it is best to keep the temperature steady within your home or business. Frozen pipes are more costly than that extra fuel.
Don’t forget to override the program’s setting when temperatures are extremely cold to keep the demand for heat steady.
Our team of experts can guide you on best practices and provide professional services to ensure your heating system works efficiently, even during the harshest of winters. Remember, keeping the heat steady during deep cold snaps is not just about comfort—it's about preventing costly damage and ensuring the longevity of your heating system.
